DEVOTIONAL READING
DAY 26: Speaking Life – Non-Violent Communication as a Reflection of God’s Love
Season of Prayer and Thanksgiving | Last 40 Days of 2025
H4J – The Homes for Jesus Network of Global Frontiers Institute
Theme:
Living at Peace with Everyone (Romans 12:18, NIV) – “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Reflection:

God calls us to be agents of peace in a world often marked by division and misunderstanding. Non-violent communication is one powerful way to live out this calling – it roots our interactions in the same principles that define God’s relationship with us: respect, empathy, and love. When we choose words that build up rather than tear down, listen with intent to understand rather than respond, and seek to connect rather than conquer, we mirror the heart of our Creator. Just as Christ bridged the gap between humanity and God through reconciliation, we are called to build bridges in our relationships, honoring the dignity of every person we encounter.

Additional Scriptures:
Ephesians 4:29 (NIV) – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
James 1:19 (NIV) – “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
Colossians 3:12-13 (NIV) – “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Colossians 4:6 (NIV) – “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Philemon 1:8-10 (NIV) – “Although I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what you ought to do, yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.”
Philemon 1:16 (NIV) – “No longer as a slave, but better than a slave—as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.”
Philemon 1:17 (NIV) – “So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.”
Connecting with H4J’s Beliefs:

This focus on non-violent communication aligns with our core convictions:

  • Peace: We affirm that peace is precious, both within us and in our relationships.
  • Reconciliation: We are called to pursue healing for broken connections whenever possible.
  • Love: Love forms the foundation of all meaningful interaction, prompting patience, kindness, and forgiveness.
Practical Application for H4J Community:
  • Examine Your Heart and Words: Take time to reflect on recent conversations – were your words rooted in love and understanding, or in frustration and judgment?
  • Practice Active Listening: When speaking with others, focus first on understanding their perspective before sharing your own.
  • Seek Reconciliation Proactively: If there is tension in a relationship you can address, take the first step to initiate a respectful, heart-to-heart conversation.
  • Speak Life: Make a conscious choice to use language that encourages, affirms, and builds up those around you.
Example: Brother Carlos noticed tension with a fellow community member over a ministry decision. Instead of avoiding the issue, he asked to meet, listened to the other’s concerns without interruption, and shared his own heart with gentleness – leading to a renewed partnership and deeper understanding.
May we be faithful stewards of the words we speak and the connections we nurture, allowing God’s peace to flow through us to all we meet.
