DAY 17: Preparing a Guest Room: Practicing Hospitality
Theme: Hospitality and Openness
Scripture: Philemon 1:22 (NIV) – “Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.”
Reflection:
In Philemon 1:22, Paul asks Philemon to prepare a guest room for him, expressing his hope to visit them in the future. This simple request underscores the importance of hospitality and opening our homes to others. Preparing a guest room is not just about providing physical space; it’s about creating an environment of welcome, warmth, and fellowship. It reflects a willingness to share our lives and resources with others, offering them a place of rest and belonging.
Additional Scripture:
- Hebrews 13:2 (NIV): “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
- 1 Peter 4:9 (NIV): “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
- Romans 12:13 (NIV): “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Assess Your Availability: Take an honest look at your current capacity for hospitality. Are there ways you can open your home or make space in your life for others, even in small ways?
Story: Sarah, a busy mom of three, initially felt overwhelmed by the thought of hosting. However, she realized she could offer a simple lunch to a new member of the H4J community after church on Sundays. This small act of opening her home made a significant impact on the newcomer, who felt immediately welcomed and valued.
- Create a Welcoming Space: Consider how you can create a more welcoming and comfortable environment in your home. This could involve decluttering a guest room, stocking up on essential supplies, or simply adding personal touches that make guests feel valued.
Story: Mark and Emily had a spare room that was mostly used for storage. They decided to transform it into a cozy guest room with fresh linens, a small library, and a handwritten welcome note. When a missionary visiting their church needed a place to stay, the guest room provided a comfortable and inviting space where he felt truly at home.
- Extend Invitations: Reach out to members of the H4J community and extend invitations to share a meal, spend an evening, or stay overnight. Be intentional about including those who may be new, lonely, or in need of fellowship.
Story: John noticed that a new family had recently joined the H4J community. Knowing how challenging it can be to adjust to a new place, he invited them over for a casual dinner. The evening was filled with laughter, shared stories, and a genuine connection that helped the family feel like they belonged.
- Practice Generosity: Be generous with your time, resources, and attention when hosting guests. Offer them your full presence and make an effort to meet their needs and preferences.
Story: Maria hosted a young college student who was visiting from out of town. She not only provided a comfortable place to stay but also took the time to show him around the city, introduce him to local friends, and ensure he had everything he needed. Her generosity made his visit memorable and impactful.
- Share Your Story: Use opportunities for hospitality to share your story and connect with others on a deeper level. Be open about your faith journey and invite guests to share their own experiences and perspectives.
Story: During a weekend retreat, David opened his home to several members of the H4J community. Over meals and casual conversations, he shared his personal testimony of overcoming adversity through faith. His vulnerability and openness created a safe space for others to share their own struggles and triumphs, fostering a deeper sense of connection and understanding.
This devotional reading encourages us to embrace the practice of hospitality and to open our homes to others, following Paul’s example in Philemon 1:22. By assessing our availability, creating welcoming spaces, extending invitations, practicing generosity, and sharing our stories, we can create environments of warmth, fellowship, and belonging that reflect the love of Christ. It’s about making our homes a haven for those in need of rest, encouragement, and connection!
