Welcome to Day 8 of Transformation!
Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!
Today, we continue our 47-day journey inspired by Paul’s letter to Philemon, seeking to deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our community.
Theme: From Useless to Useful (Philemon 1:11)
Today’s focus is on believing in the transformative power of Christ to make us useful for His purposes. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:
- Transformation: We believe that Christ can transform our lives, making us new creations with purpose.
- Purpose: We believe that God has a unique purpose for each of our lives, and He equips us to fulfill it.
- Service: We are called to use our gifts and talents to serve God and others, being useful in His kingdom.
Practical Application:
- Reflect on areas in your life where you may feel inadequate or useless.
- Pray for God to reveal His purpose for you and to equip you to fulfill it.
- Seek opportunities to use your gifts and talents to serve others and make a positive impact.
Let us continue this journey with hearts open to the transformative power of Christ. May we be empowered to embrace our purpose and become useful instruments in His hands.
Welcome, and may this be a day of moving from useless to useful!
Devotional Reading
DAY 8: From Useless to Useful: Believing in the Transformative Power of Christ to Make Us Useful for His Purposes
Theme: Transformative Usefulness
Scripture: Philemon 1:11 (NIV) – “Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.”
Reflection:
Paul’s words about Onesimus highlight the incredible transformative power of Christ. Onesimus, once considered useless, was transformed and became useful to both Philemon and Paul. This reminds us that no matter our past or perceived inadequacies, Christ can make us useful for His purposes. We are called to believe in this transformative power, both in our own lives and in the lives of others. Paul proclaims, “Christ can transform anyone from useless to useful!”
Additional Scripture:
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
- Ephesians 2:10 (NIV): “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
- Isaiah 61:3 (NIV): “…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”
Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:
Our focus on transformative usefulness aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:
- Belief 9: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ – Christ’s sacrifice makes our transformation and usefulness possible.
- Belief 10: The Experience of Salvation – Salvation brings about a transformation that makes us useful for God’s purposes.
- Belief 11: Growing in Christ – As we grow in Christ, we become more useful for His kingdom.
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Identify Your Gifts and Talents: Take time to identify the gifts and talents that God has given you. Reflect on how you can use these gifts to serve Him and bless others.
Story: Sister Mary had always enjoyed music. She realized that she could use her musical talents to lead worship at Homes for Jesus, bringing joy and inspiration to the congregation.
- Seek God’s Guidance: Pray for God to guide you in discovering how you can be most useful for His purposes. Ask Him to open doors of opportunity and to show you where you can make a difference.
Story: Brother David felt a calling to serve in his community. He prayed for God to show him where he could be most effective. He felt led to volunteer at a local homeless shelter, where he was able to provide meals and offer encouragement to those in need.
- Embrace Opportunities to Serve: Be open to embracing opportunities to serve, even if they seem small or insignificant. Remember that every act of service, no matter how small, can have a big impact on someone’s life.
Story: Sister Emily noticed that the church’s nursery was understaffed. She volunteered to help out, even though she didn’t have any experience with children. She quickly discovered that she had a gift for caring for young children and found great joy in serving in this way.
- Overcome Feelings of Inadequacy: Don’t let feelings of inadequacy hold you back from serving God. Remember that God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Trust in His power to equip you for the tasks He has called you to do.
Story: Brother John felt unqualified to teach a Bible study class. He struggled with self-doubt and feared that he wouldn’t be able to do a good job. However, he felt God calling him to step out in faith. He prepared diligently, relied on the Holy Spirit, and discovered that he had a gift for teaching and inspiring others.
- Encourage Others: Encourage others to discover their gifts and talents and to use them to serve God. Create a supportive environment where people feel empowered to step out in faith and make a difference.
Story: Homes for Jesus implemented a mentorship program to help members discover their gifts and talents and to connect them with opportunities to serve. This program helped many members to find their niche and to become more actively involved in the church and community.
This devotional reading encourages us to believe in the transformative power of Christ to make us useful for His purposes. By identifying our gifts and talents, seeking God’s guidance, embracing opportunities to serve, overcoming feelings of inadequacy, and encouraging others, we can become valuable instruments in God’s hands. Let’s commit to being transformed from useless to useful, for His glory!
