Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!

Today, we continue our journey focusing on practical ways to live out our faith, drawing inspiration from various scriptures.

Theme: Letting Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16)

Today’s focus is on living in a way that reflects God’s love and goodness to the world around us. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:

  • Witness: We are called to be witnesses to God’s love and grace through our words and actions.
  • Integrity: We should live with integrity, reflecting God’s character in all that we do.
  • Impact: Our lives should make a positive impact on the world, drawing others to Christ.

Practical Application:

  • Be mindful of how your words and actions reflect your faith.
  • Seek opportunities to share your faith with others in a loving and respectful way.
  • Live with integrity, demonstrating God’s character in all that you do.

Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to letting our light shine. May we be instruments of God’s love and grace, bringing hope and light to the world around us.

Welcome, and may this be a day of letting your light shine!

Devotional Reading

Day 30: Paul, An Old Man

DAY 30: Paul, An Old Man: Honoring the Wisdom and Experience of Older Generations

Theme: Respect for Elders

Scripture: Philemon 1:9 (NIV) – “Yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. I, Paul, as an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus…”

Reflection:
Paul’s reference to himself as “an old man” reminds us to value the wisdom and experience of older generations. We should honor those who have walked the path before us, learning from their insights and appreciating their contributions. As we continue our 47-day journey, let’s consider how we can better integrate and honor the older members of the H4J and DCN300 communities. Paul’s self-description invites: “Value the wisdom of elders, recognizing the richness of their experience and the depth of their insights!”

Additional Scripture:

  • Proverbs 16:31 (NIV): “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.”
  • Leviticus 19:32 (NIV): “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.”
  • 1 Timothy 5:1-2 (NIV): “Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”

Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:

Our focus on Paul as an old man aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:

  • Belief 12: The Church – The church is a multi-generational community where young and old learn from one another.
  • Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Showing respect for elders is a demonstration of Christian love and humility.

Practical Application for H4J Community:

  • Actively Seek Their Counsel: Make an effort to seek the counsel of older members of your community. Ask for their advice on important decisions and listen attentively to their insights.

Story: Sister Maria was facing a difficult career decision. She sought the advice of an older mentor who had years of experience in the field. Her mentor’s insights helped her to make a wise and informed decision.

  • Create Opportunities for Intergenerational Connection: Organize activities that bring together people of different ages. This could include совместные service projects, social events, or mentoring programs.

Story: Homes for Jesus organized a mentoring program that paired younger members with older members who could provide guidance and support.

  • Value Their Stories and Experiences: Take the time to listen to the stories and experiences of older members of your community. Show genuine interest in their lives and learn from their wisdom.

Story: Brother David organized a series of interviews with older members of his church. He recorded their stories and shared them with the congregation.

  • Provide Practical Support: Offer practical support to older members of your community, such as helping with household chores, providing transportation, or running errands.

Story: Sister Emily volunteered to drive an elderly member of her church to her medical appointments.

  • Advocate for Their Needs: Advocate for the needs of older members of your community, ensuring that they have access to the resources and support they need to live fulfilling lives.

Story: Homes for Jesus partnered with a local organization to provide affordable housing for senior citizens.

This devotional reading encourages us to honor the wisdom and experience of older generations. By actively seeking their counsel, creating opportunities for intergenerational connection, valuing their stories, providing practical support, and advocating for their needs, we can create a more loving and supportive community. Let’s commit to honoring our elders, following Paul’s example, and strengthening
