Welcome to Day 17 of Transformation!
Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!
Today, we continue our 47-day journey inspired by Paul’s letter to Philemon, seeking to deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our community.
Theme: Preparing a Guest Room (Philemon 1:22)
Today’s focus is on practicing hospitality and opening our homes to others. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:
- Hospitality: We are called to be welcoming and generous to those in need of shelter or companionship.
- Service: Offering our homes and resources to others is an act of service and love.
- Community: Hospitality strengthens our community by fostering connection and fellowship.
Practical Application:
- Reflect on ways you can practice hospitality in your daily life.
- Consider opening your home to someone in need of shelter or companionship.
- Look for opportunities to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to practicing hospitality and opening our homes to others. May we be instruments of God’s love, creating a community of welcome and belonging.
Welcome, and may this be a day of preparing a guest room!
Devotional Reading
DAY 17: Preparing a Guest Room: Practicing Hospitality and Opening Our Homes to Others
Theme: Hospitality
Scripture: Philemon 1:22 (NIV) – “And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.”
Reflection:
Paul asks Philemon to prepare a guest room for him, demonstrating the importance of practicing hospitality and opening our homes to others. This calls us to create welcoming spaces where people can feel loved, accepted, and refreshed. As we continue our 47-day journey, let’s remember the H4J and DCN300 communities and consider how we can extend hospitality within these networks. Paul’s message is inviting: “Open your homes and hearts, for hospitality is a powerful expression of Christian love!”
Additional Scripture:
- Hebrews 13:2 (NIV): “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
- 1 Peter 4:9 (NIV): “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
- Romans 12:13 (NIV): “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:
Our focus on preparing a guest room aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:
- Belief 12: The Church – Hospitality strengthens the bonds of fellowship within the church community.
- Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Practicing hospitality is a tangible expression of Christian love and service.
- Belief 25: Christian Conduct – Hospitality is a practical way to demonstrate Christian conduct in our daily lives.
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Evaluate Your Home’s Welcoming Atmosphere: Take a moment to evaluate how welcoming your home is to guests. Consider what changes you can make to create a more comfortable and inviting space.
Story: Sister Maria realized that her home was cluttered and unwelcoming. She decluttered, added some fresh flowers, and created a cozy guest room. This made her home a more inviting space for visitors.
- Extend Invitations: Be intentional about extending invitations to others to visit your home. This could include inviting new members of the Homes for Jesus community, hosting a small group meeting, or simply having friends over for dinner.
Story: Brother David made it a practice to invite new members of his church over for a meal. This helped them to feel connected and welcomed into the community.
- Offer Practical Assistance: Offer practical assistance to guests to make them feel comfortable and cared for. This could include providing transportation, offering refreshments, or helping with their luggage.
Story: Sister Emily’s friend was visiting from out of town. She offered to pick her up from the airport, help her with her luggage, and provide her with a comfortable place to stay.
- Create a Welcoming Environment: Create a welcoming environment by being warm, friendly, and attentive to your guests’ needs. Listen to their stories, show genuine interest in their lives, and make them feel valued and appreciated.
Story: Homes for Jesus hosted a potluck dinner for the community. Members of the church brought dishes from their native countries, shared their stories, and celebrated their diversity.
- Pray for Opportunities to Show Hospitality: Ask God to open your eyes to opportunities to show hospitality to others. Pray that He will use you to be a blessing to those who enter your home.
Story: Brother John began each day by praying for opportunities to show hospitality. He asked God to lead him to those who needed a welcoming space and a listening ear. This prayer led him to connect with a refugee family who had recently arrived in his community.
This devotional reading encourages us to practice hospitality and open our homes to others. By evaluating our home’s atmosphere, extending invitations, offering practical assistance, creating a welcoming environment, and praying for opportunities, we can reflect the love of Christ and make a positive impact in the lives of those we welcome. Let’s commit to preparing a guest room, following Paul’s example, and extending hospitality within the H4J and DCN300 communities!
