Onesimus: Seeing “My Very Heart” in Everyone
Scripture:
Philemon 1:12 (NIV) – “I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you.”
Devotional Message:
Paul’s words in Philemon 1:12 reveal a transformative perspective on human worth. He sends Onesimus, a former slave, back to Philemon, not as a mere servant, but as someone deeply cherished – “my very heart.” This speaks powerfully to our call to see beyond societal labels, past mistakes, and superficial differences, and to recognize the inherent dignity and value in every person.
This “Day 9” devotional challenges us to internalize Paul’s view of Onesimus. Are we able to see “our very heart” reflected in those we encounter daily, regardless of their background, status, or perceived worth? Do we treat everyone with the respect and compassion that signifies recognizing them as a child of God?
This means actively dismantling our biases, seeking to understand perspectives different from our own, and championing justice and equality for all. It demands a conscious effort to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO, to listen empathetically to the refugee’s story, and to stand up against discrimination whenever and wherever we see it.
Practical Application:
- Self-Reflection: What preconceived notions do I hold about people from different backgrounds? Where can I challenge my own biases?
- Empathy in Action: How can I actively listen to and understand the stories of those different from me?
- Justice Advocate: What small action can I take today to stand up for someone who is marginalized or oppressed?
- Respectful Engagement: How can I ensure that every interaction I have today reflects genuine respect and dignity for the other person?
- Inclusion Promoter: What steps can I take to create a more inclusive environment in my home, workplace, or community?
Prayer:
Loving God, open my eyes to see the “Onesimus” in everyone I encounter – to recognize Your image in each person, regardless of their circumstances. Grant me the courage to challenge my own prejudices and to treat all with the compassion and respect that reflects Your boundless love. Help me to be an instrument of Your justice and peace, building a world where every heart is valued and cherished. Amen.
