Day 6

Day 6 of Transformation

Welcome to Day 6 of Transformation!

Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!

Today, we continue our 47-day journey inspired by Paul’s letter to Philemon, seeking to deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our community.

Theme: Appealing on the Basis of Love (Philemon 1:9)

Today’s focus is on communicating with others in love, even when addressing difficult issues. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:

  • Love: Love should be the foundation of all our interactions, even when addressing difficult issues.
  • Communication: We are called to communicate with one another in a way that is respectful, understanding, and loving.
  • Conflict Resolution: Approaching conflict with love and understanding can lead to reconciliation and stronger relationships.

Practical Application:

  • Reflect on how you can communicate with others in love, even when you disagree.
  • Practice active listening and seek to understand the perspectives of others.
  • When addressing difficult issues, do so with kindness, respect, and a desire for resolution.

Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to appealing on the basis of love. May we be instruments of peace and reconciliation, building stronger relationships through loving communication.

Welcome, and may this be a day of appealing on the basis of love!

Devotiona Reading

Day 6: Appealing on the Basis of Love

DAY 6: Appealing on the Basis of Love: Communicating with Others in Love, Even When Addressing Difficult Issues

Theme: Love in Communication

Scripture: Philemon 1:9 (NIV) – “Yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love…”

Reflection:
Paul chooses to appeal to Philemon on the basis of love rather than using his authority. This emphasizes the power of love in communication, especially when addressing difficult issues. It calls us to approach conversations with empathy, understanding, and a genuine desire for reconciliation, even when we disagree. Paul demonstrates that, “Love is the most effective way to communicate, even when it’s hard!”

Additional Scripture:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV): “Love is patient, love is kind…It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs…It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
  • Ephesians 4:15 (NIV): “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
  • Proverbs 15:1 (NIV): “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:

Our focus on communicating with love aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:

  • Belief 11: Growing in Christ – Communicating with love is a practical way to demonstrate Christ’s character and foster spiritual growth in ourselves and others.
  • Belief 12: The Church – A community that prioritizes loving communication embodies the spirit of the church as a place of understanding, reconciliation, and unity.
  • Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Choosing to communicate with love exemplifies Christian behavior and our commitment to following Christ’s example in all our interactions.

Practical Application for H4J Community:

  • Pray for a Heart of Love: Begin by praying for a heart filled with love and compassion for those with whom you need to communicate, especially when addressing difficult issues. Ask God to give you empathy and understanding.

Story: Sister Emily knew she needed to address a conflict with a fellow church member. She spent time in prayer, asking God to fill her heart with love and to guide her words. This helped her approach the conversation with a spirit of humility and understanding.

  • Listen Actively: Before expressing your own viewpoint, take the time to listen actively to the other person’s perspective. Seek to understand their feelings, concerns, and motivations.

Story: During a Homes for Jesus small group meeting, Brother David made a point to listen attentively to a member who was expressing a dissenting opinion. He asked clarifying questions and sought to understand their perspective before sharing his own thoughts.

  • Choose Your Words Carefully: Be mindful of the words you use when communicating with others. Avoid language that is accusatory, judgmental, or disrespectful. Instead, choose words that are kind, gentle, and encouraging.

Story: Sister Maria had to address a performance issue with a member of her team at work. She carefully chose her words, focusing on the specific behaviors that needed improvement and offering constructive feedback in a supportive manner.

  • Focus on Solutions: When addressing difficult issues, focus on finding solutions that are mutually beneficial. Avoid getting bogged down in blame or negativity. Instead, work together to identify a path forward that is fair and equitable.

Story: Homes for Jesus was facing a budget shortfall. The leadership team worked together to identify creative solutions that would allow the church to continue its ministries without compromising its values.

  • Seek Reconciliation: Ultimately, the goal of communicating with love should be reconciliation. Seek to restore relationships, build bridges, and foster unity within the community.

Story: After a heated debate during a church business meeting, two members of Homes for Jesus made a conscious effort to reconcile. They apologized to one another, sought to understand each other’s perspectives, and reaffirmed their commitment to unity.

This devotional reading encourages us to communicate with others in love, even when addressing difficult issues. By praying for a heart of love, listening actively, choosing our words carefully, focusing on solutions, and seeking reconciliation, we can build stronger relationships and foster a more loving and supportive community. Let’s commit to appealing on the basis of love, following Paul’s example!
