Welcome to Day 12 of Transformation!
Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!
Today, we continue our 47-day journey inspired by Paul’s letter to Philemon, seeking to deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our community.
Theme: Accepting as You Would Me (Philemon 1:17)
Today’s focus is on extending the same grace and acceptance to others that we desire for ourselves. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:
- Acceptance: We are called to accept others as Christ has accepted us, without judgment or reservation.
- Empathy: We should strive to understand the experiences and perspectives of others, extending empathy and compassion.
- Grace: We offer grace to those who have wronged us, recognizing our own need for forgiveness and understanding.
Practical Application:
- Reflect on how you can extend greater acceptance and grace to those around you.
- Seek to understand the experiences and perspectives of others, especially those who are different from you.
- Practice offering forgiveness and understanding, recognizing that we all make mistakes.
Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to accepting one another as we would want to be accepted. May we be instruments of God’s love and grace, creating a community of understanding and compassion.
Welcome, and may this be a day of accepting others as we would want to be accepted!
Devotional Reading
DAY 12: Accepting as You Would Me: Extending the Same Grace and Acceptance to Others That We Desire for Ourselves
Theme: Reciprocal Grace and Acceptance
Scripture: Philemon 1:17 (NIV) – “So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.”
Reflection:
Paul asks Philemon to accept Onesimus as he would accept Paul himself, highlighting the importance of extending the same grace and acceptance to others that we desire for ourselves. This challenges us to examine our hearts and ensure that we are treating others with the same compassion and understanding that we crave. Paul’s message rings true: “Extend to others the same grace and acceptance you long for yourself!”
Additional Scripture:
- Matthew 7:12 (NIV): “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
- Luke 6:31 (NIV): “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
- Romans 15:7 (NIV): “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”
Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:
Our focus on reciprocal grace and acceptance aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:
- Belief 10: The Experience of Salvation – We are called to extend the grace we have received through salvation to others.
- Belief 12: The Church – The church should be a community where grace and acceptance are freely given.
- Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Treating others with the same grace and acceptance we desire is a hallmark of Christian behavior.
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Reflect on Your Own Need for Grace: Take time to reflect on the areas in your own life where you need grace and acceptance. Acknowledge your imperfections and vulnerabilities.
Story: Sister Maria realized that she was often quick to judge others, but slow to forgive herself. She began to practice self-compassion and to extend the same grace to herself that she offered to others.
- Identify Those You Struggle to Accept: Identify individuals in your life whom you find it difficult to accept. Consider the reasons for your resistance and ask God to help you see them through His eyes.
Story: Brother David struggled to accept a member of his church who had different political views. He began to pray for him and to seek to understand his perspective. Over time, he developed a greater sense of empathy and acceptance.
- Extend Grace and Forgiveness: Make a conscious effort to extend grace and forgiveness to those who have wronged you or who are different from you. Let go of bitterness and resentment, and choose to see them as God sees them.
Story: Sister Emily had been hurt by a friend’s betrayal. She decided to forgive her and to rebuild their relationship. It was a difficult process, but she found healing and freedom in extending grace.
- Create a Welcoming Environment: Strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment within the Homes for Jesus community. Make a point to greet newcomers, offer assistance, and show genuine interest in others.
Story: Homes for Jesus implemented a “buddy system” to pair new members with established members. This helped newcomers to feel connected and supported, and it fostered a sense of belonging.
- Pray for a Heart of Acceptance: Ask God to give you a heart of acceptance and to help you see others as He sees them. Pray that you will be able to extend the same grace and love to others that He has extended to you.
Story: Brother John began each day by praying for a heart of acceptance. He asked God to help him see others through His eyes and to love them unconditionally. This prayer transformed his relationships and made him a more compassionate and understanding person.
This devotional reading encourages us to extend the same grace and acceptance to others that we desire for ourselves. By reflecting on our own need for grace, identifying those we struggle to accept, extending forgiveness, creating a welcoming environment, and praying for a heart of acceptance, we can build stronger relationships and reflect the love of Christ to the world. Let’s commit to accepting others as we would want to be accepted, following Paul’s example!
