Welcome to Day 13 of Transformation!
Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!
Today, we continue our 47-day journey inspired by Paul’s letter to Philemon, seeking to deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our community.
Theme: Sharing the Cost (Philemon 1:18-19)
Today’s focus is on being willing to bear the burdens of others and share in their struggles. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:
- Sacrifice: We are called to make sacrifices for the sake of others, putting their needs before our own.
- Compassion: We should have compassion for those who are suffering and be willing to share in their burdens.
- Community: We are a community of believers who support one another through difficult times, sharing the cost of each other’s struggles.
Practical Application:
- Reflect on how you can share the cost of someone else’s burden today.
- Seek opportunities to offer practical support, encouragement, or a listening ear to those who are struggling.
- Be willing to sacrifice your time, resources, or comfort to help alleviate the burdens of others.
Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to sharing the cost of one another’s burdens. May we be instruments of God’s love and compassion, bringing comfort and support to those in need.
Welcome, and may this be a day of sharing the cost!
Devotinal Reading
DAY 13: Sharing the Cost: Being Willing to Bear the Burdens of Others and Share in Their Struggles
Theme: Burden-Bearing
Scripture: Philemon 1:18-19 (NIV) – “If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self.”
Reflection:
Paul’s willingness to take on Onesimus’s debt highlights the importance of being willing to bear the burdens of others and share in their struggles. This calls us to be compassionate and empathetic, offering practical support and emotional comfort to those who are facing challenges. Paul’s message is profound: “We are called to share in each other’s burdens, offering support and carrying one another through difficult times!”
Additional Scripture:
- Galatians 6:2 (NIV): “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
- Romans 12:15 (NIV): “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
- Matthew 11:28 (NIV): “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:
Our focus on sharing the cost aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:
- Belief 12: The Church – The church is called to be a community where members support and care for one another, sharing in each other’s burdens.
- Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Bearing the burdens of others exemplifies Christian behavior and demonstrates Christ’s love.
- Belief 25: Christian Conduct – Sharing the cost with others is a practical way to demonstrate Christian conduct in our daily lives.
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Be Attentive to the Needs of Others: Pay attention to the needs of those around you, both within the Homes for Jesus community and beyond. Look for opportunities to offer practical assistance, emotional support, or spiritual guidance.
Story: Sister Maria noticed that a member of her church was struggling financially. She organized a fundraiser to help him pay his bills and provided him with groceries and other essentials.
- Offer Practical Assistance: Be willing to offer practical assistance to those who are facing challenges. This could include providing transportation, helping with childcare, or running errands.
Story: Brother David learned that a member of his church had been diagnosed with a serious illness. He offered to drive him to his medical appointments, help him with his household chores, and provide him with emotional support.
- Provide Emotional Support: Offer emotional support to those who are struggling with grief, loss, or other difficult emotions. Listen attentively, offer words of encouragement, and pray for them.
Story: Sister Emily’s friend had recently lost her husband. She spent time with her, listening to her memories, offering comfort, and praying for her healing.
- Share Your Resources: Be generous in sharing your resources with those in need. This could include donating money, giving away clothing or household items, or volunteering your time.
Story: Homes for Jesus organized a clothing drive to collect donations for a local homeless shelter. Members of the church generously donated clothing, shoes, and other items.
- Pray for Those Who Are Suffering: Pray regularly for those who are suffering, both within the Homes for Jesus community and around the world. Ask God to comfort them, strengthen them, and provide for their needs.
Story: Brother John made it a practice to pray daily for those who were suffering from poverty, injustice, and oppression. He believed that prayer was a powerful way to make a difference in the world.
This devotional reading encourages us to be willing to bear the burdens of others and share in their struggles. By being attentive to their needs, offering practical assistance, providing emotional support, sharing our resources, and praying for those who are suffering, we can reflect the love of Christ and make a positive impact in the world. Let’s commit to sharing the cost, following Paul’s example!
