Day 29

Day 29 of Transformation

Welcome to Day 29 of Transformation!

Greetings, beloved family of H4J and DCN300!

Today, we continue our journey focusing on practical ways to live out our faith, drawing inspiration from various scriptures.

Theme: Sharing What We Have (Hebrews 13:16)

Today’s focus is on being generous with our resources, time, and talents to help those in need. This aligns with our fundamental beliefs:

  • Generosity: We believe in being generous with what we have, recognizing that all good things come from God.
  • Compassion: We are called to have compassion for those in need and to respond with practical acts of service.
  • Stewardship: We are stewards of God’s resources and are called to use them wisely and generously.

Practical Application:

  • Look for opportunities to share your resources, time, or talents with others.
  • Consider donating to a charity or helping someone in need in your community.
  • Be open to using your gifts and abilities to serve others and make a difference in the world.

Let us continue this journey with hearts committed to sharing what we have. May we be instruments of God’s love and generosity, bringing hope and support to those in need.

Welcome, and may this be a day of sharing what we have!

Devotional Reading

Day 29: Entreating Through Love

DAY 29: Entreating Through Love: Approaching Others with Gentleness and Persuasion Rooted in Love

Theme: Loving Persuasion

Scripture: Philemon 1:9 (NIV) – “Yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love…”

Reflection:
Paul chooses to “appeal… on the basis of love” rather than authority, demonstrating the power of gentle persuasion rooted in love. This calls us to lead with compassion and understanding when interacting with others, especially when seeking to influence their decisions. As we continue our 47-day journey, let’s reflect on how we can apply this principle within the H4J and DCN300 communities. Paul’s approach encourages: “Let love be your guide when seeking to influence others, choosing gentle persuasion over forceful demands!”

Additional Scripture:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV): “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
  • Galatians 6:1 (NIV): “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”
  • Proverbs 15:1 (NIV): “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Connecting with the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:

Our focus on entreating through love aligns with several of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Specifically:

  • Belief 11: Growing in Christ – Gentleness and love are fruits of the Spirit that develop as we grow in Christ.
  • Belief 20: Christian Behavior – Interacting with others in a loving and respectful manner exemplifies Christian behavior.

Practical Application for H4J Community:

  • Practice Active Listening: Before attempting to persuade someone, take the time to listen to their perspective and to understand their concerns.

Story: Sister Maria had a disagreement with a fellow church member about a ministry project. She took the time to listen to his concerns and to understand his perspective before offering her own opinion.

  • Seek Common Ground: Look for areas of agreement and common ground before addressing areas of disagreement. This will help to build rapport and to create a more positive and collaborative environment.

Story: Brother David was trying to convince a friend to join him in volunteering at a local homeless shelter. He started by highlighting their shared values and their desire to help those in need.

  • Use Gentle and Respectful Language: Avoid using harsh, judgmental, or accusatory language. Instead, use gentle and respectful language that conveys your love and concern.

Story: Homes for Jesus implemented a “nonviolent communication” training program to help members communicate more effectively and respectfully with one another.

  • Appeal to Values and Principles: Appeal to the other person’s values and principles, rather than relying on threats or coercion. Help them to see how your proposal aligns with their own beliefs and goals.

Story: The leadership team at Homes for Jesus was trying to convince the congregation to support a new missions project. They appealed to their shared commitment to spreading the Gospel and to helping those in need.

  • Be Patient and Persistent: Remember that persuasion is a process that takes time. Be patient and persistent, and don’t give up easily. Continue to offer your love, support, and encouragement, and trust that God will work in the other person’s heart.

Story: Brother John had been trying to convince his friend to stop drinking for many years. He never gave up on him, and he continued to offer his love and support. Eventually, his friend decided to seek help and was able to overcome his addiction.

This devotional reading encourages us to approach others with gentleness and persuasion rooted in love. By practicing active listening, seeking common ground, using gentle language, appealing to values, and being patient and persistent, we can influence others for good and build stronger relationships. Let’s commit to entreating through love, following Paul’s example, and strengthening the H4J and DCN300 communities!
