Open My Eyes, That I May See: Our Theme Song for the 40-Day Season of Prayer and Fasting (Starting November 15, 2025)
Beloved members of H4J – The Homes for Jesus (Communities) Network of Global Frontiers Institute, and prospective members,
As we approach our annual 40-Day Season of Prayer and Fasting, commencing on November 15, 2025, I am thrilled to announce that our theme song for this transformative period will be the timeless hymn, “Open My Eyes, That I May See.”
This hymn, penned by Clara H. Scott in 1895, beautifully encapsulates the essence of what we seek during this dedicated time of spiritual reflection and renewal. It’s a heartfelt plea for divine illumination, a yearning to perceive God’s truth more clearly, and a commitment to share His love with the world.
Why “Open My Eyes, That I May See”?
This hymn resonates deeply with the core values of H4J and the purpose of our 40-day journey:
- Seeking Divine Guidance: The opening lines, “Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth Thou hast for me,” perfectly express our desire to gain deeper insights into God’s will and purpose for our lives, our communities, and our mission.
- Eliminating Distractions: The second verse, “Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth Thou sendest clear; and while the wave-notes fall on my ear, ev’rything false will disappear,” speaks to the need to quiet the noise of the world and tune our ears to God’s voice.
- Embracing Compassion: The third verse, “Open my heart, and let me prepare love with Thy children thus to share,” embodies our commitment to serving others with compassion and extending God’s love to all.
- The Power of Stillness: The recurring refrain, “Silently now I wait for Thee, ready, my God, Thy will to see,” reminds us of the importance of stillness and receptiveness in our prayer life. It’s in those quiet moments that we can truly connect with God and discern His leading.
OPENLIFE: Embracing Readiness for Transformation
To guide us through this 40-day season, let’s embrace the acronym OPENLIFE, which embodies the values of readiness that the hymn inspires:
- Openness (Spiritual): Be open to receiving divine revelation and understanding. Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”
- Purification: Cleanse ourselves from all defilement of body and spirit. 2 Corinthians 7:1: “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
- External Stillness: Cultivate a state of quiet receptiveness. Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
- Nurturing Compassion: Prepare your heart to share love with others. 1 John 3:17: “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”
- Love: Love one another, for love is from God. 1 John 4:7-8: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
- Internal Humility: Count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
- Faithful Engagement: Share your faith and spread truth to others. Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
- Everywhere: Share the gospel to all parts of the world. Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
