DAY 19: Fellow Laborers in Christ: Appreciating Those Who Serve Alongside Us
Theme: Appreciation for Fellow Servants
Scripture: Philemon 1:24 (NIV) – “…and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers.”
Reflection:
In Philemon 1:24, Paul mentions Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke as his fellow workers. This highlights the importance of recognizing and appreciating the contributions of those who serve alongside us in ministry. Each person, with their unique gifts and talents, plays a vital role in advancing the Gospel. Recognizing and valuing their efforts fosters unity, encouragement, and a more effective ministry. It’s like acknowledging each instrument in an orchestra, knowing that together they create a beautiful symphony.
Additional Scripture:
- 1 Corinthians 12:14-26 (NIV): “Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many… If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body… But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be… If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”
- Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV): “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…”
- Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Practical Application for H4J Community:
- Acknowledge Contributions: Make a conscious effort to acknowledge the contributions of those who serve alongside you in the H4J community. Recognize their efforts publicly and privately, expressing gratitude for their dedication.
Story: During a recent H4J gathering, the leader made a point of acknowledging the dedication of the worship team, highlighting their consistent commitment to leading the community in heartfelt praise. This public acknowledgment boosted the team’s morale and inspired them to continue serving with joy.
- Offer Words of Appreciation: Take time to offer specific words of appreciation to fellow volunteers, leaders, and members. Highlight their strengths, talents, and the positive impact they have on the community.
Story: Sarah noticed that John, a volunteer in the children’s ministry, consistently went above and beyond to create engaging and meaningful activities for the kids. She took the time to write him a heartfelt note, expressing her gratitude for his creativity and dedication, which deeply encouraged him.
- Support Their Roles: Look for ways to support those who serve in specific roles within the H4J community. Offer assistance, encouragement, and resources to help them fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
Story: When Maria, the head of the hospitality team, mentioned feeling overwhelmed with organizing the monthly community meals, several members of H4J volunteered to assist her. This support lightened her load and allowed her to focus on other important aspects of her role.
- Celebrate Achievements: Celebrate the achievements and milestones of fellow laborers in Christ. Recognize their accomplishments and share in their joy, affirming their value and worth.
Story: The H4J community celebrated when David, a long-time member and mentor, completed his theological studies. They organized a small gathering to honor his achievement and express their appreciation for his commitment to spiritual growth and service.
- Pray for One Another: Commit to praying regularly for those who serve alongside you in ministry. Lift up their needs, challenges, and aspirations, asking God to strengthen, encourage, and equip them for their work.
Story: During a particularly challenging season for the youth ministry, the H4J community made a concerted effort to pray for the youth leaders. They received encouraging updates from the leaders, who shared how the prayers provided them with strength, wisdom, and renewed passion for their work.
This devotional reading encourages us to actively appreciate the contributions of those who serve alongside us in ministry, following Paul’s example in Philemon 1:24. By acknowledging their contributions, offering words of appreciation, supporting their roles, celebrating achievements, and praying for one another, we can create a culture of gratitude, unity, and encouragement within our communities. It’s about recognizing that we are all essential parts of the body of Christ and that our collective efforts are strengthened when we value and uplift one another!
